CAPS off to seniors

According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the fastest growing segment of the residential home remodeling industry is adding tools and equipment that older adults need to live comfortably in their homes.  This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise given America’s aging population.  It’s also not surprising that many of these older homeowners want to remain in the houses they worked so hard for all those years to pay off.

This segment of remodeling is so popular that it’s gained its own term – Aging-in-Place.  Among the upgrades that allow people to maintain an independent lifestyle are ramps and lifts that eliminate steps, showers and baths that are easier to enter and exit, and grab bars throughout the home.  All these elements can make a home safer and more comfortable.

Installing these fixtures requires more than just drilling a few holes and inserting a couple screws.  It requires a thorough understanding of the needs of an aging population and the barriers they face to moving freely throughout their home.  Aging-in-Place contractors also need to know what options are available and the building codes that govern the work.

To ensure quality work, the NAHB created a certification program that educates contractors on these issues.  T.W. Ellis has taken the necessary courses and has the requisite experience to be named a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS).  You can learn more about CAPS here, and if you need Aging-in-Place work done in your or a loved one’s home, contact us.  We’ll plan and execute a remodeling project to create a safe, comfortable environment for older adults.
